Permission to Smack?

As I was leaving Peet’s Coffee with some friends today, a lady on the patio commented to me, “On your way to the hospital?” Then she started laughing.
It was awkward because I was just walking and laughing with my friends. I was doing nothing to suggest that I was agonizing or rushing or anything. It just caught me off guard.
I said, “Yeah, I wish.” Then walked away.
Apparently it’s funny to see other people in discomfort. *Smack*

  1. It was just jealousy. I’d be willing to bet that the woman mentioned has issues with motherhood and women’s roles (Oh, pardon me, I forgot, there aren’t any! Excuse, excuse!) and took her (cheap) shot at one who obviously wasn’t keeping “in step.” (I guess that must be something new to you Steph, you’re such a conformist, after all.) Her cavalier sarcasm is a weak attempt to mask that which beckons her from deep within her very nature but is being denied, obviously with some difficulty.
I know I’m out on a limb with this one, but only a very close friend who’d earned the right to be sarcastic to such a degree would have license to comment the way she did. A stranger doing so reveals a lot of well-earned angst. I hope she enjoys the wallow.
Well, Pilgrim, here’s a little Schadenfreude right back at ‘ya!
