Wicked Cool Portraits

06/23/2005

I just checked out a post on Elyse Sewell’s blog. She saw an interesting exhibit at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. It’s an exhibit titled Dialogue With the peasants of Tiangonsi Villages by Chen Shaofeng. The artist basically had his subjects sit across from him and they would simultaneously paint portraits of each other (hence the two chairs facing each other in the center below). The exhibit shows the portrait he painted of each person hung next to the portrait they painted of him. It’s an interesting way to see how different people create, view each other, approach artistic mediums. The age and personality is also reflected in the artistry of the peasant-created portraits. There are a total of 250 portraits hung together.

Here is a pic from the back of the room. Again, the chairs in the center show how the portraits were created — each person painting a portrait of the other simultaneously.

I love the pic painted by the old bald dude. He seemed really invested in his painting. Either he was really impatient about painting, didn’t know what was going on, or is in the “special” category. Heh heh.

This is a new (and living!) artist that I’ve been digging lately. I first saw her painting Gaze on a greeting card at a local bookshop (pictured here, Oil on Canvas, 24″ X 36″, 2003). I stopped and was drawn in by the interesting way she cropped the picture and her delicate values.
Then, I checked her out on the web and saw that she has quite a broad body of work. She has some wicked looking children and some interesting portraits and still lifes.
It’s refreshing to see someone alive and real who makes work that you really respond to. She seems to have this understanding of the human psyche that really comes through her brush. I also love her simplified colors and wicked-cool shapes in the more abstract stuff.
Anyway, check her out!

The Mother of All Exams or I Type Too Fast

06/21/2005

Well, I finished my last National Board test today. It was a painfully long essay exam that basically grilled my knowledge of art and art history. I was truckin along just fine until the question about Japanese Ceramics. Yeah…that one I had to kind of work around because it’s not exactly an area I’ve studied too much. Now that I’ve researched it using my friend the Internet, I feel that my answer was pretty lame. Other than that, I think the exam went well. The other artists and works of art were all somewhat obscure, but ones that I knew a lot about. So, now I just have to wait until November to see if I passed or not. Stupid waiting.
Before I could take the test I had to take a 15 minute tutorial (it was supposed to be 30 minutes, but I whipped right through it because I’m so smart). It taught me important things like how to press the “Enter” key, how to use a “mouse” to click on “buttons”, how to use a “window”, how to “cut and paste”, how to go on to the next screen, and how to use the computer’s basic calculator (even though I was taking an ART test). I’m glad I learned these very important skills, I’m sure I will use them for the rest of my life.
Oh, and I also had to get spoken to from the test administrators. Turns out that two other people complained that I “type too fast.” It was apparently distracting other people from taking their tests. Being in a room full of people on crappy Dell computers with blinky flourescent lighting apparently was the least of their concerns…those poor souls had to sit next to me and I type SO DARN FAST! I know, I’m so inconsiderate. The lady came and tapped me on the shoulder (half way through a really good rant I was writing on the links between Feminism and Impressionism) and said, “Excuse me, could you type more slowly?”
I was like, “What? This is a TIMED ESSAY exam.”
She said, “I realize that ma’m, but people are complaining that you type too fast.”
I looked at my computer as it was ticking down the final five minutes I had on a partially completed essay response. Realizing that I didn’t have time to stop and discuss my insanely fast typing (which, by the way, under any other circumstances would be something to brag about). I turned to her and said, “I only type as fast as I think.” Then turned back and continued working on my test.
I felt kind of bad because I knew the lady next to me was one of the ones who complained. She came back from her break and continued listenting to my lightning-speed typing (which I did try to soften as much as I could without sacrificing my response time) with a series of repeated sighs and whatnot. I figured that I had three choices: 1) Continue on typing as fast and as loud as I want fully concentrating on my responses, 2) Appease the folks and type slowly but possibly sacrifice my test score, or 3) Type even faster to get done with the test and get out of there before jealous-slow-typing-complaint-lady, lest she assault me in the parking lot. I chose option number three and finished the test in record time. My essays fit all of the word counts and all that. Overall, I feel that I did rockin on the test (except on the Japanese question…whew!).

School’s Out!

06/19/2005

Yeah! I think the school year ended quite well. I had awesome students this year and they made it really great. So, now I have my Board exams on Tuesday, then start next week teaching summer school. I’m doing a 6th grade core class (Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math) so it should be pretty interesting. I’m also going to integrate some study skills in there. We’ll see!
I’ve also started a couple of new paintings. I’m pretty excited about them…they’re very simple compared to some of the other things I’ve been working on. Maybe I’ll post some pics when I’m done.

Played volleyball at a park on Sunday for like three hours. It was decent play.
Today I performed as Freddie Mercury for the school talent show. I was drenched in sweat afterwards because that man has some seriously interesting stage movements. Heh heh. Fun cardio is the best cardio.

Talent Ethics

06/13/2005

I’ve been considering some different questions regarding how a person’s talents are used and/or abused in various settings. I personally get frustrated a lot when my work overuses my talents. It’s like, when you’re the art teacher you are expected to make posters (because apparently when you’re an artist, you’re also a postermaker), manage art contests, and all that other expected stuff. But, I’ve also been pulled into set design because I have experience with that. And, now I’ve been having to emcee stuff and now do a thing for the school talent show. And, it’s those weird situations where it’s not really appropriate for you to say no because “who else would do it” or “you’re perfect for it” or “we supported you, so you support us” or whatever else the argument is.
But, I’m starting to get sick of it. It takes a lot of energy to do all that stuff. But, when I tell people no, they get this attitude with me like I owe it to them to invest another several hours in my work “for the sake of the children.” Because you should never say no when it’s for children. I look at other teachers and think they never get asked to do anything extra. So, I feel stuck a lot. Either I reveal my talents to people and get the life sucked out of me, or I tiptoe through life playing down my abilities in hopes that no one asks me to do anything. I haven’t figured out how to balance it all yet.
Do you think it would be wrong for me to ask the school to pay me extra when I emcee an event? I’m sure most teachers would say no, that it’s during the workday and blah blah. But…I’m a professionally trained actress and it takes extra time outside of the workday to organize and plan this stuff. They choose me because of my acting ability & training, not because I’m part of some rotation or whatever. I’m not compensated for the extra time I put in, other than the warm fuzzy feeling that I’m doing something great for the children. I’m not trying to sound hoochie or anything…it’s just that I have things that I do outside of my job that are also important to me.
Sorry for the vent. I’ve just been way too overworked this semester.

California Dreamin’

06/09/2005

I have a dream that one day I will have a bigger, floatier surfboard so I can snag more waves and ride them all the way in to the beach. I have a dream that this board will not require waxing and will fit securely under my arm when I carry it into waves. I have a dream that it will be ten majestic feet tall and will have one fin. I have a dream that it will be puncture-free. I have a dream that it will be a SofTop and will have some non-annoying color with a cool flowery design.
I have a dream that, once acquiring this beautiful board I will get some sweet water proof paints and create my own, personal, wicked-cool design on the bottom. This design will complement the cool flowery design on the top, except with more flair that only the Stephanie hand can give. This design will complement the colors of the board, and also incorporate some pink (of course) and perhaps a deep purple.
I have a dream that my board will be one-of-a-kind. When not surfing, I will hang it in my garage studio on my wall-mounted surfboard rack. Then, this illustrious board will serve two purposes: board on the waves, art in the studio.
I have a dream that friends from all around will also get a surf board and will join me this summer in some perfect California waves. We will surf together and have great fun. We will not laugh at Stephanie when she falls or gets dumped out the back of a wave, oh no. We will laugh with her. And sometimes this laughter will make its way to the beach for a great game of volleyball in the sand. Or a good football toss. Perhaps even a hot dog roast over a nice little fire with some sing-along worship songs. Yes!
I have this dream, and it is a good dream that feels like sweet sunshine on my lips. I can taste it. And I hope that someday I will open my eyes and see that this dream has been given the salty ocean air to breathe. I want it to live.

Had a schweet volleyball game yesterday. The only thing that stunk was that my asthma was acting up and it made it hard to breathe and I was hesitating on the court. So, I felt slower and sluggish. But, I got in a good 2 1/2 hours of play! Good fun.

Friday, I Mean Thursday

06/09/2005

I hate it when it’s a Thursday and it feels like a Friday and yet it’s still only THURSDAY! Grrr…
My throat has hurt since last Friday and now it hurts to swallow. One side of my tonsils is swollen and it hurts. I called the doctor and they told me to drink lots of liquids and take ibuprofen for a few days to see if the swelling will go down. Hopefully it will so I don’t have to have some freakish yank-my-organs-out kind of surgery. But, I hear that tonsilitis patients get to have ice cream, so on the bright side it would be a sugary surgery. Mmmmm…

Grrrrrrr…

06/08/2005

I’ve been sick since Friday afternoon and, darnit, I’m sick of being sick! It’s one of those stupid head-cold things that makes your throat hurt and your sinuses clog and your general awareness of what is happening around you very foggy. My friend Brian gave me a ride home after work on Monday, and I fell asleep in his classroom waiting for him. When he woke me up I was really confused about where I was and what was going on. Today, I stopped at Starbucks to get some hot apple cider (mmmm…good on the throat) and the lady was talking to me and I didn’t even realize it. I’m feeling pretty lame.
I took off work yesterday and basically slept all day, and I don’t feel any better today. Grrr…
On a lighter note, I finished watching all of the Star Wars episodes. They are pretty cool! And, I have to admit, I have a small crush on Harrison Ford in his younger years. And Mark Hamil looks a little like Josh did when I met him… skinny with huge blue eyes… Heh heh.
I also Netflixed the first disc from Joan of Arcadia, season 1. I watched the pilot episode and it was really good! It’s one of those shows I always wanted to watch, but it was never on at a good time for me and I didn’t have a tivo… But, now I can watch it on DVD with no commercials! Oh, the power of patience.
